Rideshare
More people are learning what many locals have known for years – the Weirton Steubenville metro area is a great place to live! With data from the US Census Bureau showing that more people are moving into our area than out, ridesharing is becoming a popular way to commute.
According to the 2010 Census, there are 7,130 people who travel from Brooke, Hancock and Jefferson counties into Southwestern Pennsylvania for work. More than 800 of those people are signed up with CommunteInfo and looking to share the ride!
Anyone can find the number of groups, seats available and even the times they travel by visiting CommuteInfo.org/VanpoolListing. Ridesharing offers many benefits, including savings on gas and wear-and-tear on vehicles, not mention found time for cat-naps or reading.
There are three official park and ride locations in the Weirton-Steubenville area: two lots at the intersection of Ohio State Route 7 and Ohio 213 (north of the Veteran’s Bridge), and one lot in West Virginia off the Harmon Creek Road Exit on US 22 (between the Downtown and Three Springs exits in Weirton). The Ohio lots offer a total of 76 parking spaces, including four handicapped. The Weirton Park and Ride has 22 spaces and two handicapped.
CommuteInfo, BHJ’s partner in promoting ridesharing, said they currently have four vanpools that travel from Steubenville-Weirton into downtown Pittsburgh every workday, and many other people locally who carpool.
In emergency situations, the CommuteInfo Emergency Ride Home (ERH) service provides reimbursement for commuters participating in a registered vanpool or carpool, allowing them to get home in the event of an unexpected personal or family emergency, personal illness, unscheduled overtime, or other covered event.
BHJ and CommuteInfo, a program of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, are dedicated to increasing the number of commuters sharing a ride to work and helping commuters choose ridesharing at least twice a week by providing them with viable options, incentives, and encouragement.

The BHJ region has several Park and Ride lots. These lots are used by motorists to combine driving and commuting activities. Many motorists commute to the Pittsburgh area from the BHJ region. Sharing the commute with two or more helps to reduce the number of single occupied vehicles on the road and helps to improve air quality through reduced total emissions from vehicles.
