Purpose

The Region 11 Hazard Mitigation Plan aims to identify and assess the risks and vulnerabilities posed by various hazards to the northern panhandle of West Virginia. By understanding these potential threats, local officials are better equipped to implement strategies that minimize loss of life, reduce injuries, and prevent future damages. The goal is to develop proactive measures that mitigate or eliminate the impact of these hazards on the community.

Scope

The Region 11 Hazard Mitigation Plan follows a comprehensive methodology that includes active public participation, a thorough risk assessment of identified hazards, an inventory of critical facilities and vulnerable areas, and a strategic approach to mitigating high-risk threats. Additionally, the plan outlines a process for regular updates and maintenance to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness.

This plan encompasses multiple jurisdictions within the region. It has been developed in accordance with the federal requirements outlined in the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA2K). Compliance with these regulations is necessary for communities to qualify for mitigation funding provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The 2024 plan serves as the official hazard mitigation strategy for the 10 participating member governments, superseding all previous versions.
