Snelting to attend WV MPO conference
BHJ Transportation Study Director Dave Snelting will be attending the West Virginia Association of Metropolitan Planning Organization’s annual conference on April 18-19 in Morgantown.
The conference, themed “Partnering for a Better Future,” is a joint conference of the WV Association of the Metropolitan Planning Organizations (WVAMPO) and the WV Local Technical Assistance Program (WV LTAP), and is tailored to individuals involved with transportation planning, design, and management.
“It’s an opportunity to hear what WVDOT is doing and what other WV MPOs are doing. I’m interested in learning how WVDOT plans to apply and implement performance-based planning in West Virginia,” Snelting said.
A requirement of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) transportation performance management is a “strategic approach that uses system information to make investment and policy decisions to achieve national performance goals.”
Snelting added that “deadlines for implementation are on the horizon.”
One of the sessions, titled “Safety Targets and the Strategic Highway Safety Plan” is of particular interest to the BHJ in terms of performance measures.
The session will outline WV’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), which used a data-driven, coordinated, collaborative approach involving federal, state, regional, and local safety professionals and stakeholders to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries.
Other sessions range from a presentation on autonomous vehicles to extending the life of roads to a report on the Huntington Transit Impact Study.
